Minecraft Fans Are Already Trying to Fix the Minecraft Movie

When Warner Bros dropped a painfully lackluster trailer for the Minecraft movie last week, it triggered an inevitable reaction: the game's passionate community of fan filmmakers, modders, texture pack creators, and dedicated players immediately began working to outdo it. The first step? Releasing fan-made reworkings of the trailer, but using classic, vanilla Minecraft graphics instead of the odd blend of hyper-realistic textures and Jack Black. Take that, Hollywood—don’t mess with our beloved Creepers.

So far, I’ve dug up two of these fan creations, and both of them instantly feel more endearing than the official movie. It’s like choosing between getting a nail pulled out of your leg and hammering another one in—the fan versions are the lesser evil. The first is from Alumio, a 3D artist, modeler, and animator known for his Five Nights At Freddy’s videos made with Minecraft’s blocky visuals.

Then there’s one from QdAndy, who admits, “I challenged myself to make it as fast as possible, and that’s why some of the stuff looks kindaaa weird? Also, it’s the best my potato PC could do without exploding.” Watching these videos means enduring the soundtrack for the Magical Mystery Tour, one of the Beatles’ more... peculiar late-career albums. Yes, I’m picking fights with Warner Bros and Beatles fans in this post. We like our Mondays spicy around here. Come at me, groupies!

Meanwhile, Minecraft add-on creator Nogard has quickly whipped up a Minecraft skin pack based on the movie’s cast. Now, the race is on to see which skinpacker can best capture the scruffy, brooding essence of Jack Black’s beard.

Interestingly, one aspect of the trailer that’s garnered some cautious praise is the use of Ghasts as hot air balloons, though let’s be real—the movie didn’t invent that idea. Those Ghasts don’t even have cannons on them!

All these shenanigans aside, I’m hoping that modders, texture, and skin pack creators start applying some of Minecraft’s more obscure aesthetics and traditions to what we’ve seen of the movie. Where are my glitchpack reinventions? Please, Minecrafters, save us from the clutches of Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and all their Hollywood antics. Every time I see a screengrab from the movie, especially during that sheep’s baaing animation, it feels like I’m witnessing the five stages of grief.

Come on, Minecraft community, it’s up to you to show Warner Bros how it’s really done.
