Capcom's upcoming entry in the beloved Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Wilds, got a new trailer at last night's State of Play event. This trailer showcases the game's stunning desert environments that change with the weather and reveals how its inhabitants interact in often hostile ways. We also got a look at some terrifying new creatures, including cursed lions, an armored frog with an unsettling tongue, and a rideable Chocobo-like mount that lets you fire arrows on the go. Let’s break down the details for you!
According to PlayStation's blog post, one area highlighted in the trailer is the Windward Plains, featuring "sandy deserts, swaying grasslands, and twisting rock formations." This is just one of many regions in Monster Hunter Wilds, hinting at more diverse landscapes filled with disgruntled dinosaurs.
The trailer introduces us to some fearsome new creatures:
Doshaguma: These cursed lions hunt in packs and have a wide habitat range, meaning you’ll encounter them often.
Chatacabra: An armored frog whose saliva attaches ore and other substances to its forelegs for extra strength. I wish I could spit metal pellets onto my shins to avoid the gym!
Seikret is your trusty bird-like mount that allows for multitasking on the move. You can use your slinger, sharpen your weapon, and gather materials while riding. It can also take you to specific spots automatically and switch to a secondary weapon without needing to return to base. Birds are awesome.
All fourteen weapons from previous Monster Hunter games are back, including new actions for the Greatsword and the Heavy Bowgun, such as a parry follow-up and a bazooka.
Focus Mode is a new addition that promises more precise control over guarding, aiming, and attacking monster weaknesses. It also helps you adjust your distance from monsters, making the game more accessible for new players.
The new slinger allows you to collect items while riding Seikret and offers additional, yet unspecified, features.
Even though I’m not the biggest Monster Hunter fan, I'm excited to give Monster Hunter Wilds a shot when it launches in 2025. The game looks visually stunning and seems more approachable for newcomers. However, Capcom needs to improve those cumbersome menus because Monster Hunter menus are the worst.
